Hi Ken:
I have just gone through doing this on my '87 5kcdtq. The actual purpose
of the tear down was to put in a new timing pin that was sheared off the
flywheel face.
I found the same thing you mentioned; so much stuff in the way. It was
much easier to get everything out of the way. I took off the front
struts (replace the cartridges, the tie rod ends, the control arms, and
bushings) and sub frame. The most difficult part was trying to
understand the darn manual. There is no way you can tap out the pin that
holds the clutch slave cylinder in place while the transmission is in
the car but that is what the manual said to do. I disconnected the
hydraulic line instead. You have to drain the lines and clean out the
slave cylinder anyway. I'll bet the old hydraulic fluid is pretty gungy
and on mine the bleed hole was packed solid and wouldn't bleed.
Take your time and make sure you have help, or the proper equipment when
you need it. email any time if you need help. I usually check my email
around 7 and 11 pm eastern time.
Cheers
George
