It very nearly wasn't 'syncro'.  Back in the early 1980s the system was
under development at Porsche Weissach.  I had a ride on a bucket seat bolted
in the rear of a Passat Variant (wagon to you) absolutely rammed full of
instruments.  I was very taken with it and even got a pre-release glossy
brochure.

Both the brochure (long lost, unfortunately) and the rear of the test car
proclaimed it to be a 'Passat tetra'.

It was renamed 'syncro' just before launch.
