No Euro hitch usable in US

My understanding is that the ball diameter on the 
Westfalia kits is 50mm.  Now I know less than nothing 
about towing, but, isn't that close enough for all 
intents and purposes to the 2" (50.8mm) diamter for US 
trailers?  Maybe it is the usual "It must be perfect!" 
German mentality.
