1990 80 Q Questions

Hey all!  Just purchased a 1990 80 Q- seems like a really nice car, but I
need input on a couple of things:
 
-The engine temp gauge does not work- heard this is common in the 80/90
series.  Temp sending unit?
 
-Shifter is a bit notchy and loose feeling, kind of wobbles- is there a
rebuild type fix?
 
Is a really clean car otherwise, hopefully it will be a good one.
