Well, if its any consolation, I can't seem to change my account settings either.  I have been going on periodic business trips these last few months, and am alway greeted by hundreds of messages when I get back, despite having turned off my account.  At least I am getting messages now, though, I was not getting anything from the list for about a month in September.
