I don't think the type 89 cars have a CAN bus.  The CAN bus was introduced
in the late 90s on the A4/A6/A8 series cars.  Despite that, the higher level
protocol used for the instrument cluster bitmap display appears to be quite
proprietary.  Otherwise, the chip tuners would have devised a way to
display the turbo boost levels there... (a feature that is sorely missed)
