Doyt,
no worries about spelling my name wrong, got used to it by now!!!! Thanks
for the description in this reply shame i couldn't open the attachment, hmmm
wonder what happened to my 5000 Haynes manual, had several of these cars
(non with a/c though.
This is a big help though, didn't want to go blundering in and bugger it up,
it works at the moment.

Hello Iain.........I sent you a really long message (big attachment) about
your belt replacement. It isn't a virus or worm, but is a page out of my
Haynes manual for the 1986 model 5000, which PROBABLY has the same engine
as your 1986 coupe quattro. The attachment is about 1,700 Kilobytes, and
essentially sez to remove the alternator and power-assist steering pump
fffffirst, to allow removal of the A/C drivebelt. Then you slacken the
compressor mounting and adjustment nuts and move the compressor in towards
the engine, before slipping the drivebelt off the pulleys. Slip on new belt
and lever the compressor until you get a 10 mm deflection on the belt,
using your thumb, at a point midway between the pulleys.
Then you tighten the adjustment and mounting nuts.
Hope I didn't jam your mailbox or crash your system with the other post.
The attachment carries a diagram, which I scanned from the Haynes. And I
spelled your name wrong, for which I apologise.
