Volvo diesel, more thoughts....

Not only was it a big mistake putting that rough engine in a passenger car,
Volvo
has made it a throw away car by making the parts, at least here in the US,
either unavailable or priced so high that people will junk the car rather
than do the engine.
We did a valve job on one a couple of years ago and spent 3 months looking
for a rebuildable core head, finding one after looking at several, and still
having to replace everything but the head itself and the camshaft, this on a
head with 80K miles on it.  The original head with 60K on it was not
rebuildable.  Volvo used parts guys say there's a long waiting list for
engine parts on these suckers.  Looks like VAG had the last laugh here.
