The european type 44 was delivered with 3 (some say 4) different
diesel engines, all 5-cylinder. From the start, a 69 hp 1986 ccm NA
diesel (CN) and a 87 hp turbodiesel (DE) was delivered. The NA diesel
was enlarged to 2.4 liters and got about 80 hp in 1988. The
turbodiesel stayed at 2.0 liters, but got an intercooler, and 100 hp.
This engine was used to 1990, when the 2460 ccm TDI (first TDI!) was
introduced. Now with 120 hp, it is quite fast too. No type 44 diesels
were available with quattro, but all as Avants. I once owned a '87 100
Turbodiesel. It used no more than 0.5 liter/10 km and was actually
powerful enough to pull a trailer, but it had manual transmission, I
guess an automatic would be a lot slower.

The engines are quite similar to the other I5 engines. Some engine
parts, like pistons, valves etc. on the 1986 ccm engine are
interchangeable with the VW 1.6 diesel.
