Mike,

Once you locate the proper replaement gear, the fix is really
simple(relatively speaking, that is). Nimble fingers help. You will, of
course, have to disassemble the instrument cluster and remove the
speedometer. The gear is accessible by removal of two small screws - if I
recall correctly - I could be way off here, but I do recall it was simple.
You pop the old/broken gear out, and put the new gear in.

As another poster suggested, you can drive the car with the IC out, so..if
you can't find a source for exact replacement of the gear before removing
the cluster, pull it out and remove the old gear (usually some teeth are
missing) and bring it to a hobby shop. Most good hobby shops have a large
assortment of small gears, and you will likely find an exact match.

Question for the list - what is the official/list "source" of these little
gears.

Ben

[Hey all,

My odometer -- both trip and regular -- stopped working the other day ('87
5KTQ). It tried cleaning the speedo cable connection near the driveshaft
and took the dash instrument cluster out to check connections...neither
reaped any benefits. Any BTDT's on this? What's the best solution?
Replace the whole instrument cluster or is there an easier (cheaper) fix?

Thanks in advance for the help.
