cv joints

Basically Audi CV joints don't fail unless the rubber boot that covers them
is torn. Once corrupted, the joint will develop the click-click-click
sound, and eventually, it will fail.
We are replacing the front axle on my father's '90 100 tomorrow. He tore
the boot last winter, and the dealer replaced the boot, and cleaned and
repacked the joint...hoping that t replacement wouldn't be necessary. It
took about three months for the clicking to start.
Whichever joint has been corrupted by having the boot torn will need to be
replaced. In the event that you don't know which boot was torn, then the
best thing will probably be to replace the entire axle, using a rebuilt axle
unit. Replacing the entire axle with a rebuilt axle will likely be less
expensive than just repairing one of the joints, unless you will be doing
the work yourself.
I have never had to replace an Audi joint, although I did have to replace
several VW Rabbit and Golf axles in cars that I owned in the past.
