When I bought my now departed 89 200 Avant, it had had NO winter driving for
more than half its life, as it had been a summer only car for people who
spent winters in the sunny south. The headlights were crystal clear, and
appeared showroom new.

The standard, DOT headlights were absolutely useless and downright dangerous
in rural driving condtions. Even high beams were useless, and it was
actually possible to drive with the high beams on, and seldom get
flashed...compared to full sized Ford pickups on low beams, the high beams
on the Audi were genuine humor.

I installed European headlights....yes, VERY expensive. But man! What a
difference! Literally night and day, and worth every penny. Standard bulbs
with relays for all four. No contest.
