The A4 Avant was introduced to the US market for model year 1998 and was
available in both front-drive and quattro versions. However for 1999 onwards
only quattro was offered on the Avant. For 1998 the A4 Avant only had the
2.8 V6 30V but 1999 and later models had a choice of either the 1.8T 20V or
the 2.8 30V.
The S4 Avant, being an 'S' car, is by definition a quattro and comes with
the 2.7 V6 30V biturbo engine.
If cost is no concern, then the S4 Avant is obviously the one to get.
That biturbo engine is s_w_e_e_t, and there are a number of cool stuff that
are unique only to the 'S' models. Once you get accustomed to driving the
S4 you get very very spoiled. :-)
