Need a second opinion....

There is a clunking/clanging noise from the drivetrain when accelerating
straight ahead OR turning left or right from a standstill such as from a
stoplight. It has become progressively worse over the past few months. It
does not occur during acceleration while driving....only from rest.
I usually do all of my own repairs but I couldn't isolate this noise. I
thought universals or rear differential but I really don't have much
drivetrain repair experience.
My wife took it to a mechanic today (he has been correct in the past when
diagnosing problems) and he informs her that the flange on the rear
driveshaft at the point where it attaches to the drive flange in the rear
differential is causing the problem and requires replacement. Cost $1,200
Canadian for the rear driveshaft. I'll get back to him tomorrow but.....
I had a look and I can't see any external evidence of a problem such as a
crack. I really don't understand how a bolted flange can cause the noise
under the stress of acceleration. Has anybody BTDT or a clue to diagnosing
this problem.
TIA
John.....
