> the tach on my 85 4kq is not working- any ideas?
The tach is driven from the Black wire with Yellow and Red stripes, attached
to the ignition coil. This wire also provides an input for things like the
oil pressure warning relay, etc. Corrosion around the coil terminals?
Otherwise, does the tach sometimes work if either a) the dash is struck
violently or b) the park lights are turned on? Both of my 4000's do this
intermittantly, I've traced it to a flaky connection on the plastic printed
circut board behind the instrument cluster. In my case the suspect
connections are located on the back side of the cluster, about where 3000
rpms would be located if viewed from the front. This may vary if your '85
has the trip computer or not. Removing the cluster and pushing/crimping the
tach connections usually restores operation.

>also, I have heat all the time, despite the fact that i manually closed the
heater valve all the way.
As others said, your heater valve sounds worn out.

> anyone make a short shift kit for this car? and how hard are shifter
bushings to install?
Blau offers a short shifter, but I've never seen/used it. The shift linkage
is knida a pain to get at, best access is from underneath.
