overheating

Jim,
Thanks for the loud thinking,
I guess that I wasn't clear on the original posting, but when the overheat
alarm went off, by the time I got to the side of the road, the reservoir cap
was boiling over - hence the loss of the coolant
I'll check the fan speeds, but at 120 km/h with a 30 km/h headwind at about
3 degrees celsius, I would expect that the fan would have been freely
spinning its heart out (pinwheeling?) without power. I suspect that 5th
gear at 95 km/h would have overheated the car, whereas 3rd gear at 95 km/h
would not have - would the lower rpm force more exhaust through a failed
head gasket, or the water pump would not be able to supply enough flow
through a clogged radiator (3 years old, exposed to at least 2 engine
flushes) to keep the car cool?
Thanks,
Steve
