It doesn't- you spread the clip enough so that you can tap the shaft out,
but the clip stays in place.  When reinstalling, the tapered shaft end
slips neatly into the clip and gives a satisfying "click" when the
shaft goes far enough for the ring to snap back into the channel.

Tap it off with a soft (copper) tip punch.  I knicked the inner rim of one
of mine in a few places becasue it was stubborn and I was impatient, and
don't *see* any resulting problems, but you're better dinging up the
punch than the joint.

Watch out below once you get them off the shaft!  Some of mine fell apart
easily, and I wasn't ready to catch the ball bearings, so they left a nice
greasy trail as they rolled to inconvenient places..

Depends how much CV joint grease bothers you. I didn't find the job hard,
but it was very, *VERY* messy.  Were I a shop I'd charge a lot for the
extra fast orange. (-:
