Driving in Spain and Portugal?

Don't know about Spain, but here're some impressions about Portugal
from 2-3 years ago.

1) Definitely go for a small car with stick shift if you plan on
visiting any old towns. The streets are narrow and twisty. And you
won't be able to climb cobblestone hills with automatic. Lucky you,
you'd have to *request* automatic rental car.

2) Don't talk on the cell phone while driving - cops *will* ticket
you.

3) Speeding (as far as your puny 1.4l will allow) is fine on
Lisbon-Porto (A1) highway, but be careful on highway IP5 (connects Spain
and A1) through Guarda.

4) People over there are not used to American passing-on-the-left.
Especially don't do this with trucks.

Good luck!
