Strange seating.....

I don't know how many listers read car and driver, but I was looking
through the articles in the most recent issue over the weekend, and
noticed something interesting. They were doing a comparison test of
small sporty cars, one of which included the new Beetle turbo-s.
One of the things that they commented on was the seats. They mentioned
that they were made by recaro, and according to them were outdated,
ill-fitting, and like the ones recaro made when they were the only
company to buy sport seats from.
Naturally, I took a look at the picture of the interior, to see the
offending seats.
"Hummm..." says I, "those look awfully familiar".
Looks to me that the seats that are in the turbo s are the exact same
seats that I am refinishing to put into my 4kq, which are simply a set
of leather sport seats out of a 4kq.
The seats in the beetle have different colors, but there is little doubt
in my mind that they are the same seat. Same shape, panels line up
exactly, even look like they have similar seatbelt latches. Not sure
about the adjusters though.
So, what gives? Is VW trying to clear out some old Audi parts stock, or
what?
And, should I just give up on restitching my seats, and go find a place
that will sell replacement seat covers for a Beetle turbo-S? : )
