Subject: 4kq Taillight R&R
My new 4kq had a cracked taillight, and therefore a wet trunk. A local
lister had a spare taillight, so I pulled the cracked one off the car. When
I removed the taillight, the black "plumbers putty like but more snot like"
material adhered about half to the taillight and half to the car, making it
a poor candidate for reuse.
Where would I get some stuff like what was used to seal the original 4kq
taillights? Any BTDT on using any other material? I am tempted to use the
Home Depot gray plumbers putty :-)
I went through the "wet trunk" phase with my 4kq, so I understand. I
picked up some of that black stuff from my local Kragen's. It comes in a
can with a nice switch to activiate the gooey stuff at will. I can't recall
the name, but it was located with all the liquid gasket material. I can get
the name for you tomorrow. The can has a picture of a taillight on it, just
make sure it is waterproof.
I put about 3 layers of the goo on the light, body and again on the light
after it was mounted. I put a bead on the top of the light, just below the
trunk opening. I haven't tired the plumbers putty, but the black stuff
looked better on my black q.

Steve
