96 A6Q Limp Home

The other night I had to jump on it to enter traffic with my 96 A6Q.  The "Check Engine" light came on and the car went into limp home mode.  36 hours later it worked fine and my mechanic came up with an intermittant transmission range error code.  Anyone have any idea what might have happened?  TIA for your response.
