Dunno about expense. Here in Massachusetts we have 100% glass breakage
insurance coverage, so a new windshield is free.

My Pilkington had some distortion that was annoying but not severe. I
haven't spent any time behnd the PPG windshield yet to find any distortion.

And my glass guy had no problem finding the PPG. In fact he had two in
stock, which was good, as the first one he pulled out to install had been
scratched sometime during the shipping process.
