Underbody preparation

Hi Gang:
I'm getting close to completing the stripping of my '87 5kcdtq. I'm
completely stripping everything off in order to do a total repaint and
rebuild of the mechanicals. The car was still running and looked decent
when I started, but after stripping down I discovered front end damage
to the frame and the body panels where the bumper attaches.
But the reason for the email is; Does anyone have any suggestions for
preparing the underbody for the second life of this auto?
Should I clean it off and recoat?
Should I just leave it as is and spray every year?
How about just stripping and patching the rusty areas?
It does look pretty sound for a 15 year old car. Any suggestions
appreciated.
Cheers
George
