As far as Colorado goes Mid May you will be fine,
although I have seen it snow 4" in Vail on the 4th of
July, but that was a very bizaar year all together.
Even if it does snow, there are only a few areas where
you will have to take it easy that time of year. I
wouldn't worry about it. I go skiing all the time in
my summer tires anyways. The more Northern states
will probably be about the same as driving through our
mountains.
