No, you don't have to remove the strut from the car. This has come up
many a time on the Qlist, do an archive search of "Hub Shark" or "bearing
tool". For the price of the labor charge, you can buy the tool and have
it handy for the next occasion.

Never heard of not re-using the snap ring, but you're right about always
get the bearing "kit" which comes with these items.
