I forgot to mention that the very first thing he did was to go
through the fault codes by bridging the contacts on top of the fuel
pump relay and reading the codes off the dash board light.

No fault were indicated.     Of course there is a possibility that
the fault code indicator is not working properly confounding the
situation.
