Thanks to all listers for ideas/suggestions and guidance. Esp thanks to
lister Tihol who gave of his time and carport to do the work. It was
interesting - esp the discussion we had about where to mark the timing belt
and gears...:)
We replaced the radiator and waterpump on Saturday and all is well.
Interestingly the waterpump was actually in good condition, so that wasn't
the problem. However the problem is fixed, no more overheating, even under
'spirited' high boost driving, and when I do get the temp up a bit it comes
down nicely from the air flow at highway speed (outside temp a bit higher
than freezing).
We figure that either the messing around and draining the engine cleared the
blockage (although we didn't see any large bits come out) or the rad leak
had developed to the point where it would leak profusely while driving and
ingest a whole bunch of air into the system.
And as I commented before, I have now fallen in love with the 86 5KTQ all
over again. I even cleaned it out, washed the engine bay and fixed some
minor cosmetic things. When these cars run well, they truly are a joy to
drive.
The yellow S8 will just have to wait a while longer.
Stephane
