Do I Really Need the Tools?

I R/R the pump on my 86 5kt with nothing more than a flat head screwdriver
and hammer.
I just whacked the lock ring till it spun off. It put a small indention in
the metal, but didn't hurt anything.
Am I missing anything? What special tool do you need?
