The threaded rod is, I believe, machined out of a larger piece of metal
that's a really tight dry fit into the bottom of the caliper cylinder. I
got mine apart by using two rather large screwdrivers, one on each side of
the rod, and gradually rocking the thing back and forth with the leverage
until it finally popped loose. There probably is a tool the rebuilders use
(at least those that are thorough--I've heard reports of "bargain" rebuilts
that the E-brake lever seizes up on shortly after installation) to pull
that part of the assembly. I first tried using the piston, but it wasn't
strong enough (destroyed it) and then I went to several fastener suppliers,
none of whom had a nut that would match the thread on the rod. Finally I
just spent some time levering with the two screwdrivers.
