in my brief experience with pretty much working ABS, what I concluded
was that it was incredible on "mixed" surfaces - ie one wheel losing
traction, or a medium amount of traction available - like some gravel,
leaves, or wet snow on the road, or ice on one side, etc.

When there is virtually no traction all around, it was easier to stop
the vehicle the "old fashioned" way.

But that means basically a sheet of ice, and if you are encountering
that, or might encounter it, you should be driving a *lot* slower than
normal, no way around that fact.

We're not talking about ice racing here, obviously, just street
conditions.
