Fuel Pumps

With the constant talk of noisy and failed fuel pumps, has anyone either
executed or investigated the installation of an aftermarket unit in the
stock pump's stead.  I would imagine that such an application would have to
be external, and the old pump would have to be left in place to seal the top
of the tanks, but are there any other issues with such a switchover?  I
haven't really investigated such a swap myself so I don't even know if there
are any possible upsides. Input would be welcome.
