OK, for the last two years I've asked the list numerous questions regarding
plopping in a turbo motor in my 87 4kq. I went back and forth over wether to
hold out for a 20vt or just use the more common 10vt. After checking my
wallet again, I decided on a 10vt. Today we traded in a 1989 200t that was
owned since new by an older lady. We've worked on it for the last 10 years
or so and know it was babied. It has 95k easy miles on it. I'm going to buy
the car and use that motor. So yes, the project is under way!
#1 Is there a definitive list of parts that I'll need to aquire before I
start? At one time someone on this list said they had a short 'booklette' of
parts and procedures to do a 4kq turbo conversion.
#2 Whole the motor is out, is there any work that should be done at that
time? I work on Audis and VW's for a living, so I know that it's best to do
a timing belt and water pump etc. but as far as anything else performance
related?
#3 Initially I don't plan on tearing down the motor, it runs very well now.
I assume that the first mod. should be a new wastegate and computer? I'd
like to get as much HP as the CIS can handle without rebuilding the motor at
this time. Eventually I'll swap out the CIS, but for now, I just want a
'cheap kick'.
#4 What can be omitted from the swap to free-up engine space? Since this
won't be used on real hot days, can the after-run water cirulation system
and the air pump system be eliminated? I certainly respect the need to allow
the engine to cool down for a few minutes after a hot run.
I'm sure there are more questions, but your help is appreciated!!
please CC your answer to waves at epix.net, thanks!!!
