A6 thermostat replacement

It is possible to replace the T-stat without removing the timing belt,
although the dealer will tell you otherwise. I've done it twice. Had to
repeat the procedure because I didn't clean mating surfaces properly and
had a minor leak. The T-stat is available from Rod at The Parts Connection
for a lot less than $45, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you paid him that
much. :-) The associated gasket can be bought at any VW/Audi dealer for
less than a dollar.
If anyone lives in the Twin Cities, Minnesota area, I'd be glad to help
out, not just with the T-stat either. I've performed many repairs on my 90
series. Otherwise, drop me a note and I can probably summerize the
procedure, or give advice on other issues too.
