I use the same argument. The problem arises when you commit to
$1500 (5 months of payments) to fix the tank and 3 months later
something else breaks, thereby "adjusting" your payment schedule.

I don't blame Audi for my gas tank leak. The car is 13 years old.
I had an '86 Taurus wagon, first year model bought new, that
ruptured its tank along a seam after four years. That upset me,
since it was just out of warranty.
FWIW, I'm leaning towards biting the smaller bullet and doing
the work myself.
