I finally traced the source of water leaking into the trunk of my 87 5k ...
turned out to be the gasket/seal at the trunk lock. This applies to the
early type 44 with the lock in the middle of the trunk. The gasket p/n is
161 827 527 01C
It's an easy swap ... remove two 5 mm hex head bolts.
It was surprising how much water could leak past this little seal once it
developed a minor looking split. It's especially bad when there's a load
of melting snow on the car and it can continually seep in over time. I had
thought/assumed the water was entering around the tail-lights, but after
re-sealing those a couple of times I started looking elsewhere.
