Does anyone see any reason it would be bad to just use whatever
belt size fits best on a particular engine, even if it's not the one
spec'ed for the car, thereby making it the new "right" size that that
particular car?

Or, is it a better idea to try and figure out and correct whatever is
off-spec with the motor that would cause that wrong belt size to fit
better than the right one?

I think I did the former at some point, probably on my 5kcstq with
the bigger alt. conversion.

So, at this point you don't have the new belt yet?  I'm sorry, I
missed the earlier parts of the thread.
