a/c belt will -not- go on

I did manage to install the "correct" A/C belt on the pulleys by seating it
as best as I could by hand, then turning the crankshaft to stretch and flip
the belt onto the larger pulley.  I had to turn the crankshaft to get the
belt off, too.  Use a stick, not your fingers on the belt when you try this!
I used a wrench on the crankshaft nut, but this could be done by blipping
the starter motor.

I don't like to do this kind of install, so I went for a longer belt that I
could seat by hand.  So far, I have been able to adjust the A/C tension to
my satisfaction with the longer belt installed.
