Hi Andrew,
Yes you can. I did it on my Mom's '89 100 Avant which was missing this
little luxury. You need the right side stalk that has the function and
reset switches. It has a harness which plugs right into the instrument
cluster. There's also another harness which goes from the instrument
cluster to the fuel ecu behind the passenger side kickpanel. Its attached
to the mass airflow sensor pot and ecu's enrichment signal output like all
other Audis except for those equipped with the digital dashes. In my case
I was able to describe these to the fellow I bought the cluster from and it
really made things go in easy. Basically its plug and play, except for the
ecu side. There I cut the wires and used inline crimp splices and heat
shrink to "tap" onto ecu signals. Works perfectly.
One caveat. The cluster I obtained was from exactly the right car (same
engine, same transmission) so it was going to work (if it worked at all
that is). I don't know what will happen if the cluster is from a 200.
