Was that expensive chunk of metal called a connecting rod and have
rubber things on either end of it and was adjustable in length?  That's
one of the pieces I got for my linkage rebuild (which hasn't been done
yet).

What kind of car do you have?

My 4kq required a small expensive chunk of metal on the end of the
selector shaft. Made all the difference in the world. I got it from
the dealer and was not happy with the price, but it's been working
great for 4 years or so.
