It was the ball end a ball and socket. A cast iron collar goes around
the selector shaft on the tranny, and the ball is stainless steel and
goes into a rubber bushing in the shift linkage. The two pieces tends
to separate and don't weld up easily because of the types of metal
used. So the dealer gets $50 for half a pound of cheap metal.
