Hi Gang,
Let me begin by saying that I hope all of you had a very Merry
Christmas and that the new year smiles on you profoundly. Personally, I
think it's laughing at me...so far. I left my girlfriend's house last
night to head home 4.75 miles up the road. As I pulled into my lil' New
England seacoast village I looked in my rear view mirror and found the
view all obscured. What's this nonsense I say to myself. I pull over in
town figuring maybe my radiator neck has snapped again, but it is fine.
What I do have is bellows of nasty smelling gray/white smoke coming
from the exhaust. The car runs fine; the oil level has dropped and I
have some oil/water emulsion inside the oil filler cap. Antifreeze in
the overflow tank is still bright orange(phosphate free) and there is
no sign of oil in it. I had just checked the compression when I changed
plugs and put on the snows a month or so ago and had 118-121 in all
five cylinders...OK by Bentley's for an MC motor. The car started right
up this morning and idled fine. I did not drive it, but once it was
warm reving it produced small amount of foul smelling smoke. When I was
driving it last night it was producing copious amounts smoke; that may
have had something to do with there being boost involved while under
load. I looked like a destroyer from one of those ol' WWII movies
laying down a smoke screen. The smoke did not dissipate quickly, but
slowly drifted through the village and out over the harbor. Luckily it
was late at night and few got to see the show. My question is: does
this sound like the shaft seals in the turbo or something more
sinister...head gasket, etc. I have not had the time to pull the plugs
and/or recheck the compression. If it is the turbo seals is it
expensive to get them replaced, or am I better off looking for a K26 in
a junk yard. What are my best options. This turbo has 152K on it and
has never been off the car. All suggestions and BTDT's greatly
appreciated, at the moment money IS an object:-(
TIA,
Shef
