If the smell is acrid it's burning coolant - borne out by the
whiteness of the smoke. My money is on some kind of gasket event at
the back of the engine - it's rare to find cylinders 1-3 involved in
this.
Fix it sooner rather than later - water in the bores destroys the
hatching, which plays an important role in retaining lubricant on the
calinder walls. It's commón to find these engines retain the original
factory hatching in bores 1-3 and have lost it in #4 and #5.
