Fw: New Years' thoughts on the new S6 Avant.....and now how about the "All Road" which several listers wrote to me about?

Well, I have driven an Audi with Tiptronic and more recently, a VW Passat
with 4Motion/Tiptronic. Each time, I left the car thinking: "Why bother".
Once upon a time in the not to dim distant past, I thought I would NEVER
want to have an automatic. Then I bought the 928S4, and found that the
secret isn't a clutch, it is the absolute YANK of the V8's torque curve.
The All Road is very attractive to me. As a real estate developer, I have
need of going onto some rough roads, and being able to lift the car a few
inches is very attractive. I was driving my 200 TQ wagon across a field
where there was a bulldozer working, and neatly yanked off the alternator
belt. An All Road would be perfect, in theory.
But I would NEVER want to have one out of warranty, and the stories of the
2.7 litre turbo engine failures is enough to make me run for the GMC.
As far as Tiptronic is concerned, I would likely never use it. Thus, my
thought is why the cutsey computer interface? I suspect that that is simply
another thing to fail.
And yes, I know that the All Road is made with a stick, but I also know that
about one in every ten thousand or something is made that way. Betcha they
drop the stick car after this year, anyway.
Still and all, I know me pretty well now. Along about the time that the S6
Avants are available, about three years old or so, and the first are
emerging from their leases, I just might find one someplace, with about
thirty five or forty thousand miles on it. Having just sold something, I
just might have the requisite thirty grand in the check book, and I will
just let YOU guess what just might happen.
All that TORQUE! Yum, yum!
Roger
(I know myself well enough now to know that I never REALLY learn.....)
