Clunk from Steering Coupe Q 86

Hi Listers

i seem to have a clunk from the steering on the above audi, i can move the
steering wheel say 1/4 of an inch either way and can feel and hear this
clunk. I have checked that the steering column bearing is ok ( which it is)
and also taken a look at the bolts that hold the steering column onto the
rack, also ok.

Whilst i had my head by the pedals i moved the wheel a little with my hand
on the steering column  and could feel the clunk even better. Is this a rack
that's gonna need replacing or maybe tierods???? All the other bushes on the
suspension are new apart from the ball joints which are fine.
