Instrument light problem after installing radio

I have also noted that my licence plate lights are dead. i tought i read in
some post here that Licence plate and Instrumant lights are related... is
this true?

I installed a new radio in my 1987 5000s Quat (non-turbo). the Tech at
crutchfield gave me the wire specs at hookup. The illumination wire
(grey/blue) and an additional wire (blue/grey) have ben taped off. will this
effect my dash lights? i've checked fuses, all seem OK.
