"Successful" is a relative term.  Mounting speakers to a sheet of
cardboard does not strike me as "good sound" no matter how successfuly
you do it.

most of the decent brands available have 3.5" speakers with just two
mounting tabs.  They'll fit.  Get the ones you like the sound of or the
story behind.  You will probably have to hack up the old frames, cutting
out the speakers, to install the new drivers.

it's better to just put good speakers in the doors though, and rebuild
that rear parcel shelf with a hunk of wood, sometime.  i did it on my
coupe, but the coupe makes it a lot easier than a 4k does.
