AUDIophiles - 4kQ

I put 6X9's in the rear deck of my 4000 S Quattro. My speakers were
400W apeice and the magnet was too large to set in the hole right. Smaller
powered speakers fit fine because they had a smaller magnet. To make mine
fit I built a rim around the hole out of plywood using a jigsaw. It's not
pretty but it elevated the speakers just enough to keep them from resting on
the metal as well as providing a stable, solid mounting surface to secure
the speaker down.
I agree with the sound being worth the effort.

The main problem with the 4kq rear deck (84, anyway) is the flimsy
cardboard above a layer of sheetmetal. The carboard is a joke for
mounting speakers and the sheetmetal is not the right shape (and
trunk springs run right across it). What I did was chuck the
cardboard and build a new wooden rear deck that bolted to the
sheetmetal and held 6x9 speakers about 4" above the sheetmetal. I
then hacked out as much of the sheet metal as possible and coated the
rest with sound absorbing goo. Covered with black carpet, it was not
too obvious what I'd done, although I never quite cleaned up the area
around the rear belts. It was definately a pain in the ass, but the
sound was worth it.
