The main problem with the 4kq rear deck (84, anyway) is the flimsy
cardboard above a layer of sheetmetal. The carboard is a joke for
mounting speakers and the sheetmetal is not the right shape (and
trunk springs run right across it). What I did was chuck the
cardboard and build a new wooden rear deck that bolted to the
sheetmetal and held 6x9 speakers about 4" above the sheetmetal. I
then hacked out as much of the sheet metal as possible and coated the
rest with sound absorbing goo. Covered with black carpet, it was not
too obvious what I'd done, although I never quite cleaned up the area
around the rear belts. It was definately a pain in the ass, but the
sound was worth it.
