Volvo, in their trucks, has what is called an anti-submarining bar.
It is a very thick and well reinforced bar, very low, that keeps the
truck from going up over the car(and then crushing it.) The vehicle
hits the bar, stops acting like a wedge. It was in the press a few
years back, I think because Volvo volunteered their design to other
rig makers, but I'm really not sure, so don't take my word for it.
Used to be they had amusing footage of a volvo dumptruck getting
flipped sideways off a cliff...sounds silly at first, until you
realize that in stripmines(and many construction sites), you're
always driving next to a cliff to get up or down.
Despite the obvious advantages for such a device on the -back- of the
trailer as well, few trailer companies have actually retrofitted such
bars to improve safety in rear-end collisions. There are notable
exceptions; some companies even paint them bright white and install
red+white reflective stripe tape etc.
