I've got a pair in my type 89 80, because the holse were already there. I
don't know if I would cut these holes myself, but they don't seem to
compromise the strength of the body too much.
Sound is excellent. I used to run 6.5" speakers in the back, and those 6x9s
opened up a whole world of definition, even when I was just driving them
from the head unit. Now that they're on an amp, the result is superb and
apart from the speakers I'm just using low- to mediocre-quality stuff (the
expensive equipment would just get stolen anyway). I did make sure that
they were firmly fixed to the metal deck instead of the cardboard shelf,
which is absolutely vital if you want decent sound.
When I replace my low-end Sony head unit with the much better Blaupunkt
from my 90q (which in turn will be replaced by a very nifty high-quality
Grundig!) I think I'll get even better response. Hmmm, that might be a good
job for the weekend, if and when I get around to it... The Grundig even has
red illumination and that clean, OE look.
